Wow, so I managed to write my dissertation and get it printed and in on time! Epic stuff. I do need to write a slightly more detailed post on my life… however, I am now up writing yet another assignment.
Just a short one, 2000 words on a database that I had to make containing sources from The Times, 1875, concerning rape and sexual assault cases. Joyful.
There will be another post much later as procrastination and panic take their toll.
Typing now, then shower, then train, then to Cottons Rhum bar for a cheeky beverage, and then to KOKO to watch me some King Blues…
Has led me to discover the huge amount of free books available on Kindle.. Loads of them are so useful to what I’m studying.. I’m such an idiot for not bothering to find this out sooner!
I can’t wait til I can actually afford to buy a kindle so I don’t have to read everything on my laptop!!
I’m still plugging away at the dissertation and have just had Judith spring a meeting on me… I have to go meet her in Kensington tomorrow at half 1 and show her what I’ve done so she can quickly look over everything and tell me that I’ve gone completely wrong!
So by the end of today I WILL have all my references sorted for each chapter, chapter 2 finally corrected, and chapter 1 done. Oh, and I also need a plan for my introduction and conclusion I don’t really need to have these written fully until Friday.
Then my weekend will be spent formatting and making sure I’ve included everthing in my bibliography and appendixes..
And then Staples on Tuesday! :) I can’t believe I’m within walking distance of the finish line of this one! And I can’t believe that I’ve chosen to put myself through this AGAIN next year… The masters will kill me!
I’m back in the living room after a weekend of family gatherings… I’m now on to my first chapter, and then I’m going to correct my second chapter and make sure the references are OK. Then I’d better back everything up!
Chris is at work so I’m hoping for a few hours of work before he gets back and I get massively distracted!
Sat in Chris’s living room doing my dissertation… It’s so weird! The last time that I was here was at Christmas. I can smell dinner and Pointless is on the TV.. AND I’ve managed to rewrite the first half of my second chapter! I’m so nearly done with the first half of the plan! I can’t wait to see the bloody end of this dissertation!
On a much happier note - yesterday we went to the Doctor Who Experience in London and ate dinner in Planet Hollywood. It was a pretty awesome day - I have many geeky photos, and, yes, I did get a tiny bit excited at the prospect of ‘flying a tardis’… I am a shameless geek :) Chris enjoyed it too to be fair!
Right, back to typing!
I’m having my last full day in the flat before going to stay with Chris and his folks tomorrow so that I have somewhere quiet to do my dissertation away from all of the distractions of work, friends, and just going out in general…
Dale was meant to be here today so that I could help him with rewriting his literature review as he’s mega stuck on it. However, he hasn’t shown… I think I may have been blown off for the girlfriend that everyone but me officially knows about. It’s so weird that he hasn’t mentioned it - he’s just taken to acting strangely instead…
Oh well, in other dissertation news, because I have no social life for the next 2 months anyways, my supervisor emailed me back. she liked the majority of what I’d done but said that I needed to add in an extra chapter aside from my historiography explaining more about the social situation surrounding the need for baby farming, and mentions of it in 19th century literature (Adam Bede, Oliver Twist etc.) and then lead on about the Infant life protection act as a way to combat the rise of the trade.
Then I’m on to Amelia Dyer… The chapter that will absolutely kick ass… Yeah, only I will even appreciate my dissertation but it’s still worth getting a little bit excited over!!!
I’m also struggling with my dedication page… It’s not meant to be that important, but it is to me. I don’t want just a list of names, I think I want an appropriate message for each person. I have one for Chris, and I think I have one for my mum, but apart from that I have no idea!
Oh well, back to typing about Ms. Dyer and her wonderful infant nursing habits…
I’m onto chapter 3 and I think I need to include a shorted chapter, maybe, defining baby farming etc, although, this could go into my historiography…
So I have:
*Title page/dedication/forward
*Introduction - why I’m even bothering to put myself through this stress
*Historical/Literature review - leading on from the intro and showing what I have already learned and why I will be adding to this base of knowledge
*Chapter 1 - an explanation of the Infant Life Protection Act 1872, and an analysis of the legislation that was involved, and an argument to state that it was purposely designed to fail.
*Chapter 2 - A case study of Amelia Dyer - one of London’s most prolific baby farmers, and one who apparently ‘slipped through the net’ of the ILPA. If there even was a ‘net’ to slip through - I will also discuss the inadequacies of the police in investigating her, and her supply of children to others that we arrested for baby farming. Moreover, that Dyer was ONLY charged for the murder of a child, and the ILPA was never mentioned in her trial.
*Conclusion - On the relevance of the Infant Life Protection Act, the effectiveness that it had on the baby farming trade, the minimal effect that it had on Dyer and her work, and what my research has done in answering this question
*Bibliography, notes, appendixes (photos, newspaper clippings, and case evidence)

I have almost finished my 1st chapter…. which includes about 30 references and is my most complicated chapter… And then its on to my second chapter - all about Amelia Dyer and her connections to the underworld practice of baby farming. Dramatic!!
I am excited to write it because it’s actually mega interesting, and I will have done it!
I just hope that my supervisor likes it, and, doesn’t think that I’ve gone off on a tangent too much!
I think that I’m going to have carpel tunnel by the end of this though!
So…
I’m having a quick pit stop in my marathon dissertation typing session. I have to have at least 2 chapters and my conclusion done today… I will do my intro last and include all my historiography etc then. Maybe going out last night wasn’t a bright idea…
I am going to sit at my dining room table all day until this is finished.. I may need to pop downstairs to tesco at some point and get food though as I might waste away sat at my laptop!
